On being Gently Bold and Quietly Standing Out
I think I’ve always tried to blend in. We moved when I was younger and I was always the new girl, trying to join friendship groups and not upset anyone (tricky with girls of a certain age). We also moved north and south between England and Scotland so I have pretty much had every accent going in order to fit in.
More than this though I am a quiet kind of person. I don’t want to be the centre of attention, a birthday party is my idea of a nightmare! So, I find myself in groups and finding a way to blend in, be the compromiser, negotiator, the organiser, the caretaker.
I don’t need to talk constantly or loudly in order to be heard.
I don’t need to be ‘shouty’ and in your face.
I don’t need to be like anyone else.
Actually, I can’t be.
However, I also have a lot to say and a lot to contribute, I join the dots and see connections really quickly. I find my own way to make those contributions, a way that is me and only me. It’s what I’ve always done and it’s what I will keep doing. That’s what integrity is all about.
As some of you know, over the last few months I have been setting up my own business and all of a sudden I need to think about things I have never really thought about before. Things like branding, marketing and social media, all best summed up as ‘putting myself out there’. I’ve tried to do this and still hide at the same time.
I’ve noticed that it can be really tempting to fall into the trap of thinking I need to do what others are doing. To do things the way others are doing them. I know that by being who I am I have helped others to create huge successes and improvements over the last 15 years.
I’m the quiet coach who helps you grow your impact in life, work and business. I thought I needed to blend in and now I am super clear that I don’t need to blend in, in fact I mustn’t.
